What a great job, Dino, describing the ways of Christian Nationalists. You nailed it! They are so unchristian in their ethics, they wouldn't recognize God if they fell over Him. They'd haul Jesus off to El Salvador for not looking super "white." As mindful as I am to be respectful towards my elders, when the eldest amongst us said, "I think all democrats should be lined up in front of a firing squad and let God figure it out" I am grateful that my immediate response was shock. It was as though the Holy Spirit used a stun gun on me. We were in an adult Bible study; I know our Pastor was ready to jump in, but a slight turn of my head silenced him.
This is a man who has for years subscribed to Franklin Graham's magazines and listens to right-wing television and radio programs, so it's not a mystery how or why he is missing the mark. The propaganda is real and it is sickening.
My approach is one of love, using Christ Jesus as my example. By making truths available to those who've been brainwashed (sprinkled with a large dose of prayer) I can hope to get a few hearts changed. But I will not beat a dead dog ~ there isn't enough time or energy in this vessel.
So, I say all this because I very much get where you are coming from. When Jesus looked toward Jerusalem, we are told He wept. Because He knew what was to come.
Sandra, I imagine it will eventually become a tired refrain coming from me “I do not believe in god. I do not follow any form of organized religion.” Please believe when I say it’s not my intent to be combative. Rather, I don’t want to be a poser. I don’t want to appear fraudulent or, worse, an imposter. But I believe in a person’s right to faith because the basic teachings are almost all uniformly good and true and human and…practical. So, in my fractured understanding of scripture, I would ask those elders not to judge lest they too be judged.
We all must ask of ourselves, “Am I being the best of myself, returning mercy and grace to the universe, even though life may have dealt a difficult hand to me personally? I don’t subscribe to vengeance, have always been a pacifist, so you can imagine how troubled my spirit is right now with the world and so many lives upended. At the end of my day, I am grateful for the comfort of a Lord who has made Himself available, not through religion but as a friend.
