Though I worked for immigration for 21 years, I often fall into the trap of referring to all enforcement as “ICE.” In reality, both CBP and ICE have what is called “Border Search Authority.” ICE, however, being the second largest law enforcement agency (FBI is largest) ICE has internal enforcement authority throughout the country. It isn’t often when one is not present with the other or notified when such an inspection is operated.
