The Authoritarian Playbook is Not a Theory Anymore
Ten Steps to the End of Democracy—And We’re Taking Them Now
By Dino Alonso
Democracy does not die in a single night. It withers in plain sight, step by deliberate step, while its defenders argue among themselves and its enemies feign patriotism. There is, by now, no serious debate among political historians about how authoritarianism gains ground. The steps are known. The method is tested. And the pattern is visible.
In this moment, the pattern is here.
Below are ten steps that appear repeatedly when authoritarianism seeks to rise. They are not just historical abstractions; they are happening now, led by a White House that does not simply reflect conservative ideology—it embodies a conservative movement that has become openly hostile to democracy itself.
1. Exploit a Crisis
Currently Active — Immigration has been declared a national emergency, not for solutions but for spectacle. The administration deployed troops to the border and invoked emergency powers to bypass Congress, feeding the image of a nation under siege. Economic anxieties and cultural shifts are weaponized as existential threats.
2. Foster Us-vs.-Them Division
Currently Active — The rhetoric has grown explicitly exclusionary. LGBTQ+ citizens are targeted by law; immigrants are painted as invaders; political opponents are enemies of the state. This is not about disagreement—it is about permanent division.
3. Undermine and Control the Media
Currently Active — The administration routinely discredits independent outlets while elevating partisan propaganda networks. The phrase "enemy of the people" is no longer metaphorical—it is the de facto media strategy. Independent journalists are attacked, and the public is conditioned to trust only what the party line produces.
4. Erode Institutional Checks and Balances
Currently Active — Courts are stacked. Congressional subpoenas are ignored. Inspector generals have been dismissed. The DOJ has been politicized to protect allies and punish critics. Loyalty supersedes legality at every turn.
5. Politicize Security and Law Enforcement
Currently Active — Federal agencies are praised when pursuing ideological opponents but demonized when enforcing the law against allies. Whistleblowers and investigators are smeared or purged. The machinery of justice is being bent toward political ends.
6. Cultivate a Cult of Personality
Currently Active — Loyalty to the leader has eclipsed loyalty to party or country. The president's image is used in religious iconography, rally chants have replaced policy, and personal allegiance is demanded at every level of government.
7. Delegitimize Elections and Democratic Processes
Currently Active — The 2020 election lie persists. Voting restrictions have been passed in key states. Election officials have been intimidated or replaced. Republican-controlled legislatures are pursuing bills to override popular votes.
8. Silence Dissent and Opposition
Currently Active — Protesters are criminalized. Critics within the party are excommunicated. Federal agencies are used to harass political opponents. Judges and juries are labeled as corrupt if they do not produce favorable outcomes.
9. Rewrite Historical and Cultural Narratives
Currently Active — Textbooks are being rewritten. History standards are gutted. Books are banned in dozens of states. The goal is to shape a compliant future generation by dictating what can be taught, remembered, or discussed.
10. Normalize Authoritarian Measures
Currently Active — Each new breach of law, ethics, or tradition is met with less resistance. What once would have caused a national scandal is now routine. Emergency powers, government overreach, and political violence are discussed as inevitabilities.
The Tipping Point
So, where is the line? When do these steps become irreversible?
The answer is: when enough of us stop believing they matter.
Authoritarianism doesn’t require everyone to agree. It only requires that enough people feel tired, cynical, or indifferent. They must believe the system is already broken, that no action will make a difference, and that it's safer to stay quiet.
But silence is permission. And permission is surrender.
A Final Warning
This is no longer a slow drift. It is a free fall.
We are not approaching the point of no return—we are in it. One more institutional collapse, one more act of political violence shrugged off, one more election rigged not by votes but by lies—and we will not be living in a democracy but in a hollowed-out performance of one.
Authoritarianism is no longer a threat. It is the plan.
This is the last moment we get to say 'Not here. Not now. Not us.'
Do not wait for a better messenger, permission, or clearer signs. History is already recording the choices we’re making today.
Call your representatives. Run for office. Protect independent journalism. Fight propaganda. Speak the truth loudly, even when it’s dangerous.
The hour is late. But it is not yet too late.
Don’t assume. Act.
